The Rosenthal Collection of African Art at Kaminski

Beverly, MA (PRWEB) April 21, 2014

Kaminski will present a second session of African Art and Artifacts, featuring a selection of items descendant from the Collection of Frieda Bojar Rosenthal collection. Descended directly from the family, these pieces represent the lifetime commitment of Frieda and Milton Rosenthal to collecting the best examples of African and Oceanic art.

Frieda Bojar Rosenthal and Milton Rosenthal began collecting African and Oceanic art in the 1960s, following the inception of the Museum of Primitive Art in New York. The couples buying focus was primarily with Sothebys during the 1960s. In the 1970s they continued to work with J.J. Klejman to build their already outstanding collection. Frieda went on to advise a number of museums, serving on the Board of the Brooklyn Museum from 1976 to 2004, working closely with the acquisitions committee.

Among the most highly anticipated items from the distinguished collection are a pair of Kota reliquary figures from Gabon. With diamond shaped bodies and concave facial plates, the figures are made from a combination of carved wood and applied metal sheets. They functioned as burial figures, and were believed to protect against evil spirits while also embodying the spirit of the deceased. These important figures are valued at $ 25,000 to $ 35,000 each.

An intricately carved door, originating from the West African Dogon tribe is also included in the collection. Fashioned from wood and wrought iron, the door depicts battling warriors, and bears the original carved lock. This spiritually important door and others like it were intended to block not only physical entrance, but also to safe-guard against evil spirits and harm. This exceptional artifact has been valued at $ 20,000 to $ 40,000.

A highly important Senufo female ancestor figure also stands out as one of the most highly valued and historically important pieces in the collection. Created by an unidentified Bamana artist, the figure would originally have been made with a male counterpart and used in ritualistic ceremonies to communicate with the divine spirit. Her form is strikingly articulated with slightly bent legs supporting a long torso and tense, square shoulders. The sloping facial plane features sharply carved browline, eyes, and nose, punctuated by a strong projecting chin. The historical significance and high quality craftsmanship build the value of this piece.

Image of the collection will be posted online April 25th at Kaminskiauctions.com. Preview for the sale will be held May 7th through May 9th at the Kaminski Auctions gallery in Beverly, Massachusetts. The sale will begin at 10:00am on May 10th, with online bidding available via Kaminski LIVE.
